Not to cotton!

In this early draft of Rumpelstiltskin, the visibly angry king returns in the morning to find that the miller’s daughter has turned the room full of straw into cotton, rather than the gold he had asked for. Whether the Grimm Brothers intended this to be a sign of confusion or an act of defiance on the girl’s part remains unclear.
