In 1858, all eyes were on Honest Abe as he verbally sparred with Stephen “The Extra Terrestrial” Douglas in a series of debates largely centered around the issue of slavery and its expansion into the territories.
* Douglas was nicknamed “The Extra Terrestrial” by his fellow masons in Springfield Lodge #4, presumably due to his small stature.
